Valia’s guide to eating out in Athens January 22 2015

Valia’s dining guide for Athens, featuring must eat food and some of her favorite restaurants and cafés to go to, for when you are in town.

The perfect weekday starts at Avocado, with a healthy boost from their amazing Go Green juice. Lunchtime always finds me at It restaurant on Skoufa street eating the spinach and salmon salad or their uber nutritious chickpea salad.

When the afternoon sweet tooth craving kicks in, there is nothing better than an original red velvet cupcake from Emi’s Cupcakes and loads of cookies to stock the pantry.

If I need some superfood power, I head to Nice’n’Easy to enjoy Sean Connery, a dish of roasted salmon with quinoa and, when naughty, the banoffee pie is perfect.

On the days I feel like indulging, my personal favorite, Vezene is the ideal place to enjoy excellent food and wine. The heavenly scallops capesante al forno and the mini wagyu burgers are a must, but the absolute pleasure is the Ari’s Deal Closer – an ice cream cake which is sure to be the devil’s work – thick and fudgy brownies with dulce de leche swirled throughout and topped with an extra drizzle of chocolate fudge sauce!

For the night out with the girls lychee cocktails happen at Freud Oriental and words like Aji Tataki (the most exotic fish ceviche) sound so familiar.

When the weekend comes, I rise early to wait in line at Takis bakery in Acropolis. The smell of the baked goods is mesmerizing and then I can’t wait to go home and devour my dinkel bread. After walking around town, the perfect lazy Saturday lunch is pizza with fresh mozzarella di bufala at Capanna.

The night kicks off and I love the Indian/electro music in atmospheric Bollywood, a place of pilgrimage for curry lovers. Queues snake out of the door at weekends, with diners traveling from afar to sample their amazing pear cardamom cocktail and tandoori grilled meat.

Sunday is the day to spend with family and the euro/american brunch at New Taste is the best way to do it. For a taste of old world Europe I always go for Eggs Norwegian while the caramel cheesecake takes me all the way to NYC.
